Many foreign trade clients wonder why, while single-layer and double-layer anti-corrosion processes still exist, 3PE coating has long dominated the high-end pipeline anti-corrosion market. The core reason lies in its three-layer composite synergistic structure, overcoming the limitations of single-layer anti-corrosion coatings; The entire coating consists of a fusion-bonded epoxy powder underlayer, a copolymer adhesive middle layer, and a high-density polyethylene outer layer. These three layers are fused together under high-temperature extrusion, preventing delamination and peeling issues, resulting in a protective effect far superior to traditional single-layer coatings.
The 3PE anti-corrosion layer consists of the following layers from the inside out:
Bottom Layer (Fusion-bonded Epoxy Powder, FBE): Typically 50-150 μm thick. This layer offers excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance, effectively preventing moisture, gases, and other external factors from eroding the steel pipe surface and providing basic anti-corrosion protection.
Middle Layer (Copolymer Adhesive, AD): 170-250 μm thick. As a transition layer, it acts as a "bridge" connecting the epoxy powder layer and the polyethylene layer, ensuring a tight bond between the three layers and preventing interlayer delamination.
Outer Layer (Polyethylene, PE): Generally 1.8-3.7 mm thick. It possesses excellent corrosion resistance, water vapor permeability resistance, and mechanical properties, resisting mechanical damage, chemical corrosion, and environmental stress, protecting the steel pipe from external environmental influences.
In terms of performance, 3PE is typically designed for a lifespan of 30–50 years, with an applicable temperature range of approximately -40℃ to 80℃. Reinforced formulations can extend this range slightly further. Impact resistance generally requires ≥8–10 J/mm (depending on the standard), peel strength ≥100 N/cm at room temperature and ≥70 N/cm at 50℃, and cathodic disbondment (65℃/48h) controlled within 8–10 mm-these are typical indicators in GB/T 23257-2017.
Those involved in foreign trade need to be familiar with the standards. Domestically, GB/T 23257-2017 and SY/T 0413-2002 are mainly promoted; European projects recognize DIN 30670; international oil and gas projects often refer to ISO 21809-1; and North America sometimes uses CSA Z245.21. Interestingly, these standards are not entirely consistent in their requirements for thickness grading and peel strength-for example, ISO 21809 dynamically sets the minimum thickness based on pipe diameter, while DIN 30670 gives fixed values based on category; ISO also has more detailed requirements for high-temperature conditions. Before accepting an order, it's best to confirm which version the client specifies to avoid future disputes.
Application scenarios basically cover half of buried pipeline networks: long-distance oil and gas pipelines (extensively used in projects like the West-East Gas Pipeline and the China-Russia East Route), urban gas pipeline networks, municipal water supply and drainage, chemical media transportation, mine water supply and drainage, and even power cable protection conduits. Whenever the pipe needs to be buried underground, or if there is corrosive soil or high water levels nearby, 3PE is generally the first choice; For straight seam submerged arc welded pipes (LSAW), 3PE is a standard combination-LSAW itself has stable weld quality and high roundness, and the coating uniformity is easier to control with 3PE than with spiral welded pipes. This is why many high-specification projects specifically request LSAW + 3PE.
Currently, our 3PE anti-corrosion coating strictly follows the domestic standard GB/T 23257, while also being compatible with international standards such as ISO and DIN. The process is stable, parameters are controllable, and we support customization of different thicknesses, including standard and reinforced grades. Whether it's long-distance oil and gas pipelines, urban gas pipelines, or industrial water supply and drainage and chemical fluid transportation pipelines for foreign trade projects, we can provide standardized, high-quality 3PE anti-corrosion pipe products to meet the engineering construction and acceptance requirements of different regions around the world.
