Straight seam submerged arc welded pipe (LSAW) is manufactured in accordance with ASTM A252/A252M standards and is mainly used as structural pile foundations in building foundation projects. The standard specifies three strength grades (Grade 1/2/3), among which the minimum yield strength of Grade 3 steel pipe is 310MPa and the tensile strength is not less than 455MPa, which is suitable for heavy-load foundation projects such as high-rise buildings and cross-sea bridges. This type of steel pipe is made of hot-rolled steel plates through JCO forming and double-sided submerged arc welding. The typical specifications are 219-3000mm in diameter and 6-40mm in wall thickness. It has excellent axial pressure bearing capacity and bending resistance. The standard allows the use of carbon steel or low-alloy steel materials. Although the chemical composition is not mandatory, the manufacturer is required to provide a smelting analysis report to ensure weldability. Unlike API 5L pipeline pipe, ASTM A252 steel pipe focuses more on structural strength rather than low-temperature toughness. Usually, only conventional tensile tests are required, and impact tests are only supplemented when special requirements are met. After welding, visual inspection and non-destructive testing are required, but the testing standards are looser than API, focusing mainly on the continuity of the weld rather than minor defects. This type of steel pipe is often filled with grouting concrete to form a steel tube concrete composite structure, which can significantly improve the bearing capacity and seismic performance of the pile foundation. Compared with European standards such as EN 10219, the ASTM A252 standard focuses more on North American market habits and is widely used in China for super high-rise building pile foundations, cross-sea bridge piers and other projects. For example, projects such as the Shanghai Tower use steel pipe piles of this standard.

 

ASTM A252/A252M specifies the technical requirements for welded and seamless steel pipe piles, primarily including the following:
Material Grade: Grade 1 has a tensile strength of 50,000 psi and a yield strength of 30,000 psi; Grade 2 has a tensile strength of 60,000 psi and a yield strength of 35,000 psi; and Grade 3 has a tensile strength of 66,000 psi and a yield strength of 45,000 psi.
Dimensional Tolerance: The outside diameter must not exceed ±1% of the outside diameter, and the wall thickness must not exceed -12.5% ​​of the nominal wall thickness.
Production Process: LSAW pipes are manufactured using high-quality steel plates welded using the LSAW process. Welding parameters must be strictly controlled to ensure weld quality.
Applications: ASTM A252 Standard-produced LSAW pipes are mainly used in heavy engineering fields such as bridge piling, dock construction, and offshore platforms, as permanent load-bearing components or as shells to form cast-in-place concrete piles.
