Engineering Application Advantages of Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (LSAW) Pipes in Large-Diameter Transmission Scenarios

In large-flow transmission projects such as long-distance oil and gas transportation, municipal water supply, and large-scale water conservancy, large-diameter Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (LSAW) pipes have become the main piping for trunkline projects by virtue of their forming process and comprehensive performance advantages. LSAW meets the core demands of high pressure and large flow, and has been deployed at scale in key transmission projects worldwide.

I. Large-Diameter Thick-Wall Forming to Match Large-Flow Transmission
The core demands of large-diameter transmission are to increase transmission capacity, reduce pumping stations, and lower operating costs. Using hot-rolled wide heavy plate as raw material, LSAW is produced through JCO/UOE press forming plus double-sided submerged arc welding. Outer diameters range from 508 mm (20″) to 1,422 mm (56″), with wall thicknesses from 6–50 mm, matching different pressure ratings. Compared with seamless pipes, LSAW requires no large piercing equipment, resulting in lower production difficulty and cost, making it better suited for long-distance trunkline projects.

II. Stable Weld Performance for Safe and Reliable High-Pressure Transmission

Large-diameter pipelines operate under sustained high pressure for long periods, making the weld the critical stress-bearing point of the pipe body. LSAW adopts internal and external double-sided submerged arc welding, delivering sufficient penetration and uniform microstructure, with mechanical properties close to the base metal. The longitudinal weld is perpendicular to the principal stress direction, providing a clear load path without additional shear stress and offering higher pressure-bearing redundancy. Full-process AUT/RT inspection enables precise defect locating and repair, ensuring controllable quality that meets safety standards for high-pressure scenarios such as long-distance oil and gas transmission.

III. Excellent Dimensional Accuracy for Outstanding On-Site Construction Efficiency

Long-distance transmission often traverses complex terrain such as wilderness and mountains, where construction efficiency directly determines project schedules. After forming and finishing, LSAW pipes exhibit excellent roundness, straightness, and end squareness, resulting in minimal fit-up misalignment and higher first-pass weld qualification rates. Standard 12-meter fixed lengths (customizable to 18–24 m double lengths) reduce the number of welds per unit distance compared with shorter pipes, significantly cutting on-site welding workload. Pre-fabricated standard bevels at pipe ends are compatible with automatic welding processes, further boosting construction efficiency in challenging conditions.

IV. Flexible Solutions Covering Diverse Transmission Scenarios

LSAW base materials and surface treatments can be customized to meet the needs of different industries. Base metals include X42–X80 line pipe steels (with X90/X100 in pilot applications) for high-pressure oil and gas transmission, or carbon structural and low-alloy high-strength steels such as Q235B and Q355B for low-pressure municipal and water conservancy applications. Surface options include 3PE, FBE, and other anti-corrosion coatings to suit buried, overhead, coastal saline-alkali, and other corrosive environments. Beyond long-distance oil and gas transmission, LSAW solutions are widely adopted in urban water mains, inter-basin water transfer projects, thermal pipelines, and other large-diameter applications.

V. Full Life-Cycle Cost Advantage with Significant Engineering Economy

From a full life-cycle perspective, LSAW offers clear comprehensive cost advantages. At equivalent diameters and pressure ratings, procurement costs are significantly lower than large-diameter seamless pipes, with shorter batch delivery cycles that help control upfront project investment. Long fixed lengths and high precision reduce on-site welds and rework, lowering labor and time costs during construction. Stable weld quality combined with long-term anti-corrosion systems extends pipeline service life and reduces later-stage operation, maintenance, and replacement costs.

LSAW's comprehensive performance in forming capability, pressure-bearing capacity, construction efficiency, and economy is highly aligned with the core demands of modern large-flow transmission engineering. As long-distance pipelines, large-scale water conservancy, and municipal infrastructure continue to advance, LSAW will remain a mainstay, providing reliable piping support for all types of transmission projects.
